Your Planet: Our Commitment
At Cleveland, we understand the importance of integrating sustainability, social responsibility, and robust governance into every aspect of our business.
Since the launch of Cleveland Group, we’ve considered all areas across the organisation and set achievable and purposeful targets for improving environmental sustainability and employee wellbeing.
As we continue to map out our net zero strategy, take a look at what we have already achieved and what actions we are taking to improve our ESG, becoming both a supplier and employer of choice.
Environmental
Cleveland is a committed member of the SME Climate Hub and the Supply Chain Sustainability School. These memberships provide us with knowledge and guidance on how to enhance our sustainability performance across our supply chain, reduce our environmental footprint, and contribute to a more sustainable construction industry.
In 2023, in partnership with Sustainable Advantage, our carbon credits supported the Maisa REDD+ Project in Brazil, helping to protect thousands of acres of the Amazon rainforest. In 2024, our credits contributed to the Katingan REDD+ project in Indonesia, supporting ecosystem restoration and preventing the release of millions of tonnes of carbon. We achieved carbon neutral certification for Scope 1 and 2 emissions for 2023–24 (finalised October 2025) and are currently calculating the same scope emissions for the business period 2024-2025. Our next supported project will be confirmed shortly.
Since the start of 2024, from the 544 tonnes of waste we’ve generated, 338 tonnes (62%) of materials have been recycled, and 202 tonnes (37%) of waste has been diverted from landfill. We use 100% renewable energy sources at our headquarters and have solar panels at our Middlesbrough depot. We also ensure that all company cars are electric or hybrid.
Each step brings us closer to our ESG goals, and helps us to become a more responsible, eco-conscious company.
Our Environmental Responsibilities
Clean energy
100% renewable energy used is used to power our Stockton headquarters. Our Middlesbrough depot has 28 solar panels and a capacity of 14KWp.
Carbon offsetting
We offset our carbon emissions through targeted investment in global biodiversity schemes and conservation projects.
Waste reduction
64% of business waste is recycled and 35% is recovered, with less than 1% going to landfill. (Stats from January 2024 - January 2026)
Industry commitment
As members of the SME Climate Hub and the Supply Chain Sustainability School, we receive guidance on how to contribute to a more sustainable construction industry.
Social
Cleveland is proud to be an official living wage employer. The real living wage is the only UK wage rate based on the cost of living. Voluntarily paid, it's funded by businesses who believe that their staff deserve a fair wage rather than the minimum.
Further demonstrating our support of employees, we have received the ‘We Invest in People’ Accreditation from Investors in People. This recognition highlights our commitment to prioritising our staff and staying true to one of our six values - ‘We’re People, People’. It emphasises the importance we place on having a positive workplace culture, supporting continuous training and development, and promoting the overall well-being of our employees.
Each year, our employees select a different charity to support, as a way of giving back. Our charity committee plans and hosts multiple fundraising events throughout the year, to raise vital funds for communities and charitable organisations.
Our Social Responsibilities
We are Investors in People
We have been recognised with the Investors in People accreditation, demonstrating a positive people-first workplace culture that supports growth, wellbeing and professional development.
We are a Living Wage employer
We are proud to be an official Living Wage employer, voluntarily paying the only UK wage based on real living costs to ensure fair pay for staff. Cleveland also provides an enhanced pension, supporting employees’ long-term financial security.
Safety first
All employees must complete mandatory online training on health, safety, business compliance, and HR, while office-based staff also undertake cyber security training to ensure comprehensive workplace compliance and safety.
Training and development
There is strong investment in staff training, covering professional qualifications and technical skills across all departments, with mandatory diversity, equity, and inclusion for a multicultural workforce.
Supporting our people
Our internal employee assistance programme offers counselling, financial advice, and debt support. Employees also access top-level benefits, including therapy, cashback on essentials, gym discounts, and retail offers.
Where charity begins
Each year, employees choose a charity to support through fundraising events, raising vital funds. Recent causes include Teesside Hospice, Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity and Maxi’s Mates.
Governance
Cleveland has worked closely with suppliers, insurance companies and industry bodies to create a fleet of site accommodation units that we believe are a gold standard within JCoP (Joint Code of Practice) fire regulations.
Our Cleveland Hire units are also EPC “B” rated, offering outstanding energy efficiency and eco-friendly features, which saves hundreds of pounds per year in running costs, compared to a standard specification. Recent reviews of our modular building projects have achieved an A-rating for energy performance.
We’ve ensured that our Cleveland Modular range and Cleveland Hire fleet of anti-vandal units do not compromise when it comes to fire safety legislation and fully comply with JCoP 10.1, for 100% site insurance peace of mind.
